Hello World

“Hello World” is the default WordPress title of the first blogpost that appears on a newly created blog. I quickly deleted it, thinking that surely I would come up with a title more witty than that. Well, it turns out that I didn’t, but it also dawned on me that “Hello World” summarizes everything a first blogpost should say. Basically, I’m introducing myself to you, the world and anyone else that might be interested in my musings.Hello World!

But besides “Hello World” being my personal introduction to you, this short phrase has a different meaning to the programming population of the human species. A couple of months ago, I started with an internship in a computational biology department. One of the first things I had to learn was how to program or script. The very first program most people write when they learn a new programming language prints out “Hello World” on the computer screen. Since I’m not that different from most people, “Hello World” was my first self-generated output, announcing my arrival to everyone who read my message (expectably – that turned out to be just me).

On the picture you can see what this first script looked like. The first line tells the computer that this script is written in the language called Perl, the second line is the command that prints out “Hello world!” followed by a new line. Off course, the scripts that followed were immensly more interesting. A particular script that asked for your age, and then gave “You are XX years old!” as an output, comes to mind… Just think of the applications!

That very first, small script was my introduction to programming.  This very first blogpost is my introduction to blogging and to you. So, without much further ado…

Hello World!
